Despite its slow beginning Kyo Kara Maoh is a joy to watch that will have you begging to watch the next episode. KKM blends a medieval world with magic to create a land including such legendary creatures such as Dragons while still grounding itself with the characters feelings. KKM centers around Yuri Shibuya who is selected to become the next Demon King at a time when war between Humans and Demons seems inevitable. Throughout the series we watch his transformation from a boy unsure about himself to the Demon King who protects all life while getting himself into hilarious hijinks along the way.
At first glance most people believe that KKM is guy on guy romance based upon it's frequently cross-dressing characters and its male/ male engagement. In fact however our main hero Yuri Shibuya is not attracted to his fellow males but manages to stumble into an engagement with one leading to some funny reactions from him throughout the show. It keeps up it's undertones of male with male while managing to have several guy with girl relationships.
As we move forward in episodes the series takes on a more series tone with someone Yuri trusts betraying him and his kingdom returning to the brink of war several times. The series only continues to build from there easily introducing new characters with their emotional baggage attached and moving Yuri's character into a more secure role as Demon King.
All in all Kyo Kara Maoh is an endearing series with many lovable characters and hilarious scenes included. I recommend KKM to all those who want to laugh so hard they fall out of their chairs and to all those who want a King with a heart that can change the world.
